    Nefeli Skarmea

Nefeli Skarmea is a movement director, yoga instructor and art curator based in Geneva.

Following her education in classical ballet and contemporary dance, Nefeli worked with independent choreographers as well as in state theatres, such as Tanztheater Nürnberg, cie. Toula Limnaios, Colette Sadler/Stammer Production (Berlin), cie. Alias/Guilherme Botelho (Geneva), among others.

Yoga practice has accompanied her dance career since 2001. In 2011 she received the teacher training diploma as a disciple of yoga visionary Sri Louise in the Dayananda Ashram in Rishikesh, India, and hence regularly teaches a somatic-based Asana Practice, combining physical knowledge which references a variety of yoga traditions.

As a movement director, Nefeli has collaborated with visual artists who incorporate a performative aspect in their practice, such as Martin Creed, Cally Spooner, Joanna Piotrowska, Megan Rooney. She is responsible for the reconstruction and restaging of early pieces by the performance and video pioneer Joan Jonas (Tate Modern, London, 2018; the Serralves Museum Porto, 2019).

Nefeli holds an MA in Cultures of the Curatorial, completed in 2013 at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. From 2016-18, she was Assistant Curator at Art Night, a contemporary arts festival activating unusual spaces in different parts of London for one summer night; while previously, she worked at the Serpentine Galleries’ Public Programmes and at dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel.

Since the summer of 2020 Nefeli is involved in Arta Sperto, a Geneva-based association organizing and producing multidisciplinary projects, notably the exhibition "Dance First. Think Later - Rencontre entre danse et arts visuels", which recently took place at Le Commun, Bâtiment d'art contemporain, in Geneva.
